Catholic Higher Education Student Scholarship (C.H.E.S.S)

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

The Catholic Higher Education Student Scholarship (C.H.E.S.S.)

will be awarded to:

1. A full-time/part-time student(s) who is(are) active, registered parishioner(s) of St. Vincent de Paul Church or his/her child/(children).

2. The scholarship is intended primarily as a one-year award and is non-renewable. Exceptions may be granted if unique circumstances are deemed warranted by the selection board.

3. The recipient(s) should be in need of scholarship assistance. Need may be financial or personal as know and determined by the selection board

4. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is currently attending or planning to attend an accredited Catholic college or university (excluding all seminaries) located in the United States of America. If an applicant is planning to attend and not currently enrolled, documentation must be included with the scholarship application. If no qualified applicants apply, the funds will remain undistributed until the next application year for which a qualified applicant applies.

Before applying, you will need to have the following supplemental items. It is best to first save your answers in a Word or Pages document, then copy and paste your text into the form.

  • A personal statement describing your need for scholarship assistance.

  • All co-curricular activities, offices, academic recognitions, awards and honors with dates.

  • All community service you have led and/or participated in, with dates of service.

  • All the ways you have ministered at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with dates of service.

  • Two letters of recommendation (one for academic work and one for character).

  • If you are currently attending a college/university or have attended in the past, attach transcripts; otherwise, attach your acceptance letter from a Catholic college/university.

Fr. Mike Baldwin Endowed Scholarship

The Father Mike Baldwin Endowed Scholarship was established by Drs. Gene and Margaret Ann Hughes while parishioners at St. Vincent de Paul Church. They were members of the parish during the time they served as President and First Lady of Wichita State University (1993—1998).

Fr. Mike Baldwin was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Harry and Catherine Baldwin. He grew up in Coffeyville, Kansas and is one of five children. After graduation from Field Kinley Memorial High School in Coffeyville, he attended Coffeyville Community College, followed by study at St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger, Kentucky and Mt. St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Fr. Mike was ordained by Bishop Eugene J. Gerber on May 21, 1983. He served as pastor at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Andover, Kansas from 1987 to 2011.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

The Fr. Mike Baldwin Scholarship will be awarded annually to full-time and/or part-time students who are registered St. Vincent de Paul Parishioners or their children.

Selection Criteria:

  1. The scholarship is intended primarily as a one-year award and is non-renewable. An exception may be granted if unique circumstances are deemed warranted by the selection committee.

  2. The recipient(s) should be in need of scholarship assistance. The “need” may be financial or personal, as known and determined by the selection committee.

  3. The scholarship(s) will be awarded to a student planning to, or currently attending, Wichita State University.

If no WSU applicant is available, the funds may be awarded to students attending a local Catholic K-12 school.

If a St. Vincent de Paul School should be established in the future, this school would take preference for the scholarship(s).

STEM Scholarship

The St. Vincent de Paul Endowment Foundation established the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship for St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church parishioners and/or the immediate family members, to aid in the goal of pursuing an education in the STEM fields at an accredited university in the United States of America. All degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics are eligible for the scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a full-time student or part-time student who is a registered St. Vincent de Paul parishioner or an immediate family member.

The selection criteria are:

  1. The scholarship is for a student who is pursuing a degree in STEM field(s) of study.

  2. The scholarship is intended primarily as a one-year award and is non-renewable. However, it can be reapplied for on a yearly basis.

  3. The recipient should be in need of scholarship assistance; the “need” may be financial or personal as known and determined by the selection committee.

  4. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who is currently attending or planning to attend an accredited university located in the United States of America.

Before applying, you will need to have the following supplemental items. It is best to first save your answers in a Word or Pages document, then copy and paste your text into the form.

  • A personal statement describing your need for scholarship assistance.

  • All co-curricular activities, offices, academic recognitions, awards and honors with dates.
